We recently heard some exciting news from a young person who has been with carers since he was 3 years old. Now 20, Andrew developed an intense interest in lights and electronic equipment. Andrew’s complex background, as well as being on the autism spectrum, presented many developmental challenges along the way, but his carers, Ray and Nancy continually maintained a strength-based focus, always believing that he could achieve success.
Andrew has commenced a work experience position, but has shown such talent that this role is likely to become permanent this year. His commitment has also been recognised by the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce, including Andrew in the 2019 Youth Business Enterprise Awards.
Congratulations to Andrew for all he has achieved, and also to his carers for their commitment to supporting him. Our team reflected that these carers were always proactive in gaining skills and resources to help them along their foster carer journey: “They are too modest to acknowledge themselves, but we are so proud to have carers like them with us. They loved and believed in Andrew, and they were always open to support and advice to meet the challenges of fostering (for which parenting your own children sometimes does not equip carers).”
