One of our former clients has shared her story to encourage others to pause and think about those experiencing homelessness: “… Many times I had been ripped (off), or my money was stolen, or I was punched and everything was taken, even my blanket. So many times I literally had nothing in the world. There is so much judgement of homeless people… (One morning) I was walking to go get a blanket, some clothes and shoes (because mine had been stolen overnight)… It was raining… All I could hear were people saying “Look at her”, “You think she could change her clothes”, “She’s not even wearing shoes”. I felt like screaming at them “What do you think I’m doing?! I’m going to get clothes and shoes now! Don’t you think I wish I did have other clothes to change into! I’m trying!” Jessica* hopes that her story will inspire others to ask for help if they need it, as it can be hard to take that first step, but the rewards at the end are worth it. *Jessica is now a proud member of our local community so we have changed her name to ensure that her story is told anonymously.
